The National Medical Commission (NMC) periodically updates regulations governing Indian students who wish to study medicine outside India. These rules are designed to protect students from unrecognised institutions and ensure that graduates can return to practise in India.

Key Requirements for 2026

1. NEET UG Qualification

Every Indian student must qualify NEET UG before enrolling in any foreign medical programme. There is no exception — even if the foreign university does not require it, NMC mandates it.

2. University Recognition

The foreign university must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by the medical regulatory body of its home country. Additionally, it should appear on the NMC's approved list. Always verify from the official NMC website before committing.

3. NExT Eligibility

Graduates from overseas medical programmes must clear the National Exit Test (NExT) to obtain a licence to practise medicine in India. NExT is expected to serve as both a licentiate and a postgraduate entrance exam.

4. Duration and Medium

The programme must be at least 54 months of academic study followed by a clinical internship. The medium of instruction should be clearly stated.

What Students Should Do

  • Verify university recognition on the NMC portal before applying
  • Keep all academic and NEET documents ready and attested
  • Start NExT preparation alongside your overseas studies
  • Work with a knowledgeable consultancy that stays updated on regulatory changes
